FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE IMMACULATE COMPLEXION A Debut Novel You’ve tried chick lit, now try some lip lit. A new novel written by two former beauty publicists, The Immaculate Complexion, is a satirical send-up of the cutthroat world of prestige cosmetics. Think: “The Women” meets “Sideways” -- just substitute moisturizer for merlot. Our heroine, Marnie Mann, is a vintage-wearing, do-it-yourself girl who lands a coveted job at the glamorous headquarters of LeVigne Cosmetics. As she is promptly thrown to the W-reading wolves, Marnie gets a pores-and-all look at the not-so-inno-scent world of fragrance and beauty. Working with the ditzy Hilton-esque granddaughters of the company’s matriarchal founder, Marnie must contend with a batch of tainted Botox and product launches gone spectacularly awry. When a DNA skin cream caper erupts, all manicured fingers point to Marnie. Is it murder by makeup? Amidst this mayhem, lactose-intolerant Marnie falls in love with the stinky man of her dreams (a cheese manager at Dean & DeLuca). Marnie succumbs to adaptation, wanting to look prettier by any means necessary until she realizes beauty must come from within. In response to the corporate culture she’s immersed in, Marnie starts an all-natural, eco-friendly skincare line in the hopes that she can make the world a better place, one lavender foot scrub at a time. Before Marnie quits, she is determined to meet Hattie LeVigne, the company’s wizened founder to try and find out the secret formula for her best-selling cream. It’s like discovering what makes Coke Coke! When the mysterious Hattie suddenly appears at work and reeks havoc, she’s got everyone shaking in their Balenciaga boots. But not before her spoiled granddaughter commits a tawdry crime of passion involving fellatio and a blush brush and is carted off to jail! The Immaculate Complexion takes a cheeky, irreverent look at the multi-billion dollar beauty business. While it is tongue-in-chic, it also deals with such serious themes as: our communal fear of aging and our quest for eternal youth; the sometimes outrageous promises that the beauty industry makes; and the extremely timely matters of organic living and thinking green.
